The electoral college still gives a slight nod to area over population. I do agree that in many states both blue and red there is no reason to vote in presidential elections because the result is predetermined. Not through cheating but simply due to the leanings of the state.
I do not want a popular vote because the flyover states will be completely insignificant then.
A compromise that I think should be looked into in the Maine, Nebraska method. Each congressional district gets one electoral vote and the two remaining go to the winner of the state.
But, here is the rub, nothing in the constitution tells the states how to apportion their electoral votes. the states would have to decide to do this and for it to work well all states would need to do it at the same time. So it could be a case where every state did it individually but it would not go into effect until all had agreed. Damned near impossible to pull off.
