excuses because he was qualified and competent at the job.

The actual excuses to be offered that weren't made were:

1. Losing the availability of Dixon for his sr year
2. Having Bowers get injured twice
3. Having 3 players leave early for the NBA

Those significantly impacted his results and were valid excuses. But of course he never stooped to something like that.
