this feels like Groundhog Day all over again.
"According to KOMU's Chris Gervino, SMU AD Rick Hart has emerged as a candidate. Hart's grandfather was Mizzou's AD from 1978-1986 and Dave Hart Jr. is the AD at Tennessee. Gervino followed it up by with sources telling him more names to watch: Sean Frazier of Northern Illinois and Jeff Compher of East Carolina."
Dave Hart hired Woody. He also alienated about half the fans during his tenure.

Detailing Hart’s arrival at MU in 1978, here’s an excerpt from Bob Broeg’s book “Ol Mizzou: A Century of Tiger Football”:
“At that time, the athletic director’s job at Missouri, only major college athletic school in the state, was noted for its stability. … Thirty-three men applied for the job. The process was slowed because Herb Schooling, retiring, wanted his successor, Barbara Uehling, to double check. She helped pick Dave Hart, an unsuccessful head-college football coach at Pitt — only 3-27 — but an aggressive, promotional-minded athletic director at Louisville. Hart, 53, a graduate of St. Vincent’s College at Latrobe, Pennsylvania, was faced with the immediate challenge of meeting a $5.1 million budget, of filling those 10,400 new seats and of helping upgrade attendance in basketball.”
Under Hart’s watch, Missouri fired Warren Powers after seven seasons as head football coach and hired his successor, Woody Widenhofer. In 1986, Hart left MU to become the commissioner of the Southern Conference. MU hired Jack Lengyel to replace him.
Note that Woody was hired when John Cooper was available. Cooper, I believe the leading contender at the time, did not like being slow-walked by Babs in the process (while other potential HC jobs were filled) and went to Arizona State instead for 1985-1987. Then he spent 13 successful seasons at Ohio State.
