That was not an experiment, it was just unwanted failing.

Look I'm not saying the University of Missouri should suck at football.
I'm saying football as a whole might not be a worthy activity.
Ultimately what is the benefit? We as fans get to vicariously live through the real-time action and outcomes of 22 players on the field.
It's fantastically difficult to predict the outcome and competition is taking place not only on the field, but in coaching hires, in recruiting, in fan support of stadium and building and so on.
What a massive undertaking. I assume the sensations of winning a conference championship or national championship make it all worthwhile.
For now I'd like to see CTE declining or a strategy for making that happen. I'd like ex-players not to be crippled. I'd like the college degrees conferred to count as much in society as degrees given to students outside the football program (with the resulting employment percentages comparable). And I'd like the players to get a real slice of the money for the entertainment they provide, not a token stipend. And I'd like the players to get some kind of special counseling/training so that the incidents of criminality start going down.
Move all that in a responsible direction and it would be a much more sustainable activity.
I know - not asking for much, but doing nothing will just increase all these dark aspects and ultimately I don't want to be part of supporting all that...
