The biggest single reason Tiger football was just plain bad was there was not commitment by the campus administration to having a competitive program. I.e. the worst facilities in the Big Eight, not taking Prop 48 kids when NU, KU & KAtate were, etc. The situation bottomed out at the end of the Stull era.
Chancellor Charles Kiesler made a decision that Tiger football needed to be "competitive". He took some steps to implement that decision. Dan Devine was convinced to come back for a year to be AD and get the program headed in the right direction. Larry Smith, a proven coach, was hired. Joe Castigline, the Tigers' first "professional" AD was hired. A long term facilities plan was started. Admission standards for recruits were dropped to the levels at other Big Eight schools.
The obvious point is while the Pinkel Alden team deserve lots of credit, they did not start from Ground Zero and a good deal of ground work was done by some of the predecessors.
