it up to the committee
Your CONFERENCE season makes the choices (with 1 exception)
Since the conference Champ game doesn't have any meaning do away with it and have 32 teams play 16 games.
Conference winners of each group of 5 conference are in PLus (here is the exception) highest ranked 2nd place team. That's 6 of the 32. They play each other for 3 spots in the 16 team playoff.
Top 6 teams of ACC, Big 12, Big Ten & SEC (avoiding rematches) play each other within their conference. SEC plays SEC, BIG plays BIG, B12 plays BIG 12, ACC plays ACC. That's 24 of the 32.
The last 2 teams are the 7th place finishers in the SEC & BIG TEN who will play each other for a spot in the playoff.
These 16 games take place on the weekend after Thanksgiving and all take place on campus. These 16 games are all qualifiers to see who gets into the 16 team playoff.
The remaining bottom of conference teams in the ACC, BIG, B12, & SEC play each other on campus in cross conference matchups, again on campus in order to add 1 game and the revenue needed to help pay these players.
The winners of the 16 games qualify for the playoffs and teams are reseeded at that point. This is the only reseed that takes place in the playoff.
Getting rid of the championship games is gonna be controversial, but they really don't mean anything anyway. Just a game to get a key player injured.
