be done with all this realignment and mid-major automatic playoff bid nonsense.

SEC will take North Carolina, Virginia, Clemson and Florida State.

B1G can have Notre Dame and their pick of Stanford or Cal.

that's 2 conferences of 20 teams, with 4 divisions each. the 8 division winners face each other in a conference playoff, conference champs play each other in a national title.

or if you want to get fancy, the 8 division winners are seeded 1-8 and you run a conference-agnostic playoff from there.

any mid-major team that wants to invite a non-playoff SEC/B1G team to play in a post-season exhibition game can have at it. they can even keep all the revenue from it, less travel expenses and an appearance fee of course.
