As for comments ascribed to John Quincy, Sam et al cries out for sourcing. And just an FYI, all religious and spiritual traditions have at their core the practice of human decency and care for others. Those are hardly exclusively Christian values, but high-end human values. Confusius was promoting what the West references as the "Golden Rule" 600 years prior to the emergence of Jesus of Nazareth. The Rabbi Hillel for instance when asked to condense the lessons of the Torah responded that he could do so while standing on one foot in five words - "As you would unto me".
