They *do* count. Perhaps one way to structure things

so that things are fair for the 2 main conferences while still leaving open the possibility of a Cinderella team would be to just try and honestly rank all of the teams when playoff time rolls around and include the top 16 teams whoever they may be.

If a Big 12 or ACC team or Mountain West team makes it, kudos to them. Even more kudos if they get 2 or more teams in, as long is the rankings are as honest and accurate as they can reasonably be.
