And don't get me wrong I'm no fan.

White coach - hot shot assistant on a good team, deserves a chance at a D1 program.

Black coach, does not so has to take some low level coaching gig (utep, Cleveland st, etc). Work their chops but lack of resources gives them little success. Now they are tainted forever as being losers and even when they take over for a lucious white coach and continue success it is only due to their previous white coach laying the foundation.
