to promote Terry to HC – in fact, I'm quite sure they didn't want to given his terrible 3-year tenure at UTEP:

He was clearly a bad coach, but the admin felt pressure to avoid the appearance of racism – so they promoted him. They might have thought that with NIL and their enormous resources, they could buy him a roster that was too good to fail... but they were wrong.
