I don’t subscribe to the notion that as long as he brings in talent he is going to be fine. The list of good recruit/bad coaches that failed is incredibly long. I’m not saying Gates is a bad coach but if he is then it isn’t really going to matter how much talent he accumulates.
I did watch the MU/ku game last night. I think the jury is still out for this reason. Last year we almost always had second half leads, even against very good teams, only to collapse midway through the second half and lose every single game. Then the same thing happened against Memphis. We gave up a 17-0 run to Cal before completing a tremendous comeback. And then against ku the exact same thing happened as all the previous games where a 24 point lead became 2, with us only preventing the collapse because Mitchell improbably converted a 3 pointer that in most regards was a bad shot.
I still need to see some consistent evidence that he puts a decent priority on actually winning games, and we need to end this continual pattern of in game collapse. I think if Mitchell misses that 3 or if Grill was healthy and played the narrative would have just been a continuation of how he can’t manage rotations and we had another historic collapse. I definitely don’t think all questions have been resolved.
