Now the students have two potential sources, NIL and revenue sharing. The NIL stuff still isn't fully resolved, as the cases that have come to the supreme court (OBannon and Alston) were specifically about non-cash compensation. However, the court sent a strong signal that students own their NIL and would rule that way if it was put in front of them. The NCAA wanted to get out ahead of that and consolidated three pending cases and offered a $2.8B settlement.

It's still very complicated. The NCAA is asking student athletes to sign on to the settlement and hope to make it lucrative enough that everyone gets on board, because the NCAA knows they will lose in court for the remaining restrictions they're trying to hold in place. They don't want full-on collective bargaining with an athlete union.
