they're easier than confronting ingrained statism. To acknowledge that they are not actually crimes is to refuse to accept the state's authority to dictate otherwise.

Also, let's consider the Overton window. The reason everything keeps moving left is because leftists don't care about appearing reasonable and keep repeating their nonsense until it starts to stick with other people. Meanwhile, "conservatives" still fight that taxation is theft and that non crimes aren't crimes.
