buy good gear upfront ... it will save you a lot of pain. I'd just got to REI and start there. Some basics are clearly a hiking pack, backpacking tent (get a 2 person for more room even if it's just yourself), rocket stove, spork, water bottle, water filtration system (skip the tablets), sleeping bag, and a leatherman multi-tool. You can opt for a traditional fire starter, but I'd just roll with a good windproof lighter and/or waterproof matches. If you want to cut some wood, then get a packable saw as well. You can use your phone as a GPS with certain apps, or go old school with a compass. If you use your phone, then a portable charger would come in handy. Also, for your shoes, skip the hiking shoes and get a good pair of trail runners. I recommend skipping the waterproof shoes as you'll just get hot and water will find a way in them anyways. You can always pack a pair of crocs or TEVAs for water crossings.
