gear.
You can do the internet thing for tent, sleeping bag, backpack, mattress pad, lights & equipment and spend 1/3 or less than what you will getting the good stuff at a store like REI.
But your gear will weigh 30% more ... or more ... and rip and tear after a couple trips ... depending on how much you want to do it.
You can carry about 20% of your weight for a day long hike. So a 200lb guy can carry 40 lbs. More than that you are pushing your luck unless you just got out of boot camp, especially if it is more than a 2 day hike.
The gear I described from REI above with food & provisions will get you in the 32-38lbs area and the cheap stuff will be 44-55lbs and your friends will wonder why you can't keep up or why your pad sucks and your back hurts all day
Literally compare the good and cheap gear and weights of each and decide what you can and can't live without for what amounts to about of extra lbs or two per item and it makes all the difference in the world.
