predictor of NCAA Tourney success. Some teams do get hot like NC State and defy that but teams that do well in the tourney generally have already proven they can win against anyone.

Mississippi State and South Carolina were not those teams. Both played extremely weak non conference schedules with S Carolina beating a couple of major but non tourney teams and getting beat by Clemson while MSU was beat by Georgia Tech and Southern with their only notable win against Wash State.
