My recollection of the Haith years is fading but I do not remember a top incoming recruiting class under Haith (at least HS recruiting). Haith landed some high profile transfers to be sure but I don't remember good recruiting at the high school level.
Haith inherited a great offensive but not very deep team that was not all that well suited to Anderson's pressure defense. Once freed from that system, they excelled. I don't think Haith was the catalyst for anything other than that.
Gates impressed me last year. Brought in some key players to complement Kobe. Great results. I expected a backstep this year (and said as much here) and that's what we are seeing but it doesn't mean the future isn't good. I never felt that optimistic with Haith despite the presence of Clarkson et al. Gates seems capable of recruiting at a higher level than Haith and putting together a team that plays well together despite this season's issues.
