hit you or shoot you before you can use force to defend yourself.

Flying glass could injure occupants of the car and it might be too late to pull away at that point if someone reaches in and grabs the keys or knocks the driver out or shoots or stabs him.

If they're already banging on windows & jumping on the vehicle, it seems to me that any injuries they or those swarming around the car sustain are the result of their own foolishness.

Protecting those attacking others only encourages that type of dangerous behavior.
