It is a question for him, as he was claiming that I was mischaracterizing his views.

The word defending would come into play in an analogous way to a situation where an adult is asking a child a question, but the child who for whatever reason is reluctant to answer, and another adult jumps in to answer questions for the child. They feel that they are defending the child from discomfort or whatever, but may be doing the child no favors in enabling them to refuse to come out of their shell.
