immediately fell to 5th place in the SEC the next year despite a much more talented and deep roster that following year. It has never come close to competing for a basketball championship in the SEC in over a decade, despite winning 2 of the final 4 basketball championships in the Big 12 when it was still a major conference.

That would be a pretty hard phenomenon to explain if the Big 12 was actually more difficult.
