minority of teachers. In most districts the unions are basically powerless and nothing more than a professional organization.

From my observations far less than half of the teachers belong to the NEA and of those that do most do so for the legal protections and insurance they provide. As a teacher you can get private professional insurance but it is cheaper to join the NEA and get the coverage they provide with membership. I have never felt the need to have that insurance but there are teachers who are much more comfortable with it. That is where a goodly portion on the NEAs funding comes from.
