The scholarship is arguably more expendable than NIL money is.
The 13th of scholarship player on the team never really matters anyway and you can take a flyer on a guy as you and I have discussed with a great many players in recent years.
And while they are both finite resources, if you’re giving XXXX bucks to a guy like him to sit on the end of the bench and do nothing, what if an extra XXXX bucks is the difference in failing to land one of the truly good players you were trying to get?
There is no value in this kid being on the team. He is using up resources and he no longer counts as a project that might be of value someday, he’s already proven he can’t be a guard and it’s not like he’s a 7 foot tall guy that you hope you can turn into something.
