Maybe the kid made a mistake and the old man acted rashly. Not every death is criminal, sometimes people make mistakes that lead to the death of another person.
I'm not saying that is the case here but I suspect that the truth lies somewhere between the kid being a criminal and the old man being an executioner.
Whatever happened here it is sad for the family who just lost a child.
