Christians should be following much of the Torah.
I know it's an unpopular opinion in western Christianity, but if I start struggling with it I go back to Jesus' statement in Matthew 5:17-18 (pasted at the end of my response for readers convenience).
Some portions of the 'law'
- are untenable/not possible right now - no temple, so no offering sacrifices, no Levitical priests currently exist, etc
- have been nullified due to Christs' death on the cross (no more sin atonement sacrifices necessary),
- are followed without realizing it - the basic concepts of our criminal justice system are rooted in many of the same concepts behind the societal laws and punishments of the Torah. We don't acknowledge this because it's what we grow up with in America, but in many countries the justice system bears no resemblance to what God laid out originally for His people.
We (non-Jewish believers) are grafted into the covenant God made with Abraham, Isaac and Jacob spiritually, and thus I believe to be MOST obedient to God, we should try as best to follow the Torah as possible.
Almost all of Jesus' words during his ministry are direct quotes or sourced from the Torah, if He was building a 'new' religion detached from the Torah entirely, why wouldn't he come up with his own source material?
What are we supposed to do? Love God.
How do we love God? Obey Him...that's clear throughout the entire canon of scripture, old and new testament.
How do we obey Him/what do we obey? His law/regulations.
NIV - Mat 5:17 "Do not think that I have come to abolish the Law or the Prophets; I have not come to abolish them but to fulfill them.
Mat 5:18 For truly I tell you, until heaven and earth disappear, not the smallest letter, not the least stroke of a pen, will by any means disappear from the Law until everything is accomplished.
