The difference is small, but significant.
Devine took over a program that Frank Broyles had bailed on after a signle season with the comment that Missouri folks were totally unrealistic in what they expected to accomplish.
Devine won two conference titles and took the Tigers to the Orange Bowl three time, the Sugar once and the Gator once in the years before college football had twenty-five or thirty bowls.
Devine also served as Tiger AD during the later part of his career. All those "big games" than Onofrio won in the 1970's were scheduled by Devine, an indication of where he intended to take the program.
Devine enjoyed great success at Arizona State and, after struggling for five years with Green Bay, great success at Notre Dame.
