Missouri 35, Nebraska 31!!!
What a HUGE thrill — Cornhuskers thought they were “in” for a national championship after beating Oklahoma for the first time in Tom Osborne’s HC career.
Nebraska’s Rick Berns broke a trap play 80 yards for a TD on the first snap from scrimmage. The stands in Memorial Stadium were swaying, I swear. And I was wearing Mizzou gear, and a Go Big Red wise guy turned to me and said, “What do you think about your Tigers now?”
Well, about 3 1/2 hours later, you’ve never seen such a funereal atmosphere as Husker Nation zombied its way out of the stadium. It was as though 76K dressed in red had watched the end of “Old Yeller” without a spoiler alert.
And as I sat at a Lincoln restaurant for dinner — this is no lie — the same GBR wise guy sat nearby. And of course, I sauntered over, clapped him on the back, and broke the silence in the room by saying, “THAT’S what I think of my Tigers now!!”
