He has a number of really good qualities to make a successful HC. He also was missing many qualities would have come with time and experience. Namely the ability to hire good assistants who can develop talent (as evidenced by the severe lack of development minus just a small handful of players) and his ability to prepare his team to be ready to play after long layoffs as evidenced by his horrible record in the first 5 games of seasons and in games coming off byes/bowl games.
If he had the chance to learn these things for 5 years as an HC at the G5 level he could have succeeded here, much like Pinkel did. But the timing was against him.
