would guess that the DA knew that they had a weak to indefensible case and under normal circumstances would decline to prosecute like this.

They probably got orders from on high to shut up and prosecute and get a conviction.

I would hope that prosecutors should be looking for justice, not hoping to convict innocent people to get another notch in their belts.

It should be a crime for them to intentionally mislead juries.

The ends do not justify the means. In this case, even the ends are unjust.
