Story got dressed up over time as the Jesus tradition morphed with Paul and John. Theologically the basis moved from an exaltative model where God is so pleased with Jesus that he exalts him to Divine status to one where - eventually the claim would be Jesus was all human all God all the time.

You don't really need Jesus also unless you buy into the Garden of Eden Adam and Eve story. People love the rites and rituals though, good for teaching.
