"Kroger, the massive grocery chain, will close three of its stores in Los Angels after the city passed a measure mandating $5/hour "hero pay" for essential workers. Rather than comply and give their workers the extra $5/hour they deserve, Kroger decided to shutter their stores instead. This is the third instance of Kroger closing stores rather than paying their workers more.
The company claims that they couldn’t afford to give their workers the extra hazard pay. Please. Kroger has raked in record profits throughout this pandemic, posting third quarter operating profits of $792 million — a threefold increase from 2019. Meanwhile, Kroger CEO Rodney McMullen gets paid $21.1 million a year. So rather than have its multimillionaire CEO take a pay cut or use those profits to help their frontline workers, the company is making them jobless instead. Let me repeat that: Kroger would rather lay off their workers, as the pandemic rages on and unemployment remains high, than give them an extra $5 an hour. "
