I prefer "in person" learning for my kids as well. I think the majority of kids learn better in those environments, where there's an adult keeping them "on task". Some kids don't learn well virtually, while others thrive in it. Hell, I prefer an "office environment". If you are a person who's prone to distraction, this environment is much tougher.
For kids from "at risk" homes, this environmet is certainly tougher. They may not get meals, certainly don't get structure, and as 4Tigs pointed out, there are some cases where their environment led to their deaths, just by virtue of being on the streets, not, at home.
Where I disagree with him is by saying that you should never have done it in the first place because only 1 child under 18 died from Covid. That doesn't speak to the potential spread from kids to adults who may be at risk. There were a lot of unknowns and while I do think there were unnecessary measures, folks were shadow-boxing against an unknown opponent. I don't blame them for things which none of us knew. We can all blame them for politicizing it and making it worse, but I'm not laying it on them because they tried to do something, even if that something didn't work.
