To try to use the President's use of an absentee ballot because he drove past a building where he could have voted early ignores the fact that the building would have to have been shut down for hours, inconveniencing an untold number of other people. As a practical matter, he would have been blasted for the intrusion on other peoples' day, accompanied by the claim it was only for a photo op.
There is far too much evidence of the failure of mail in ballots to rely upon them as the primary way to vote. Most, if not all jurisdictions allow early voting; which means complaints about having to wait in long lines are in many cases, if not most, a product of personal choice.
You have to request an absentee ballot. It isn't sent to you without you specific awareness that it will be coming.
Selecting an arbitrary mail out date doesn't mean each voter is aware of a mailout. You're asking for people to accept constructive notice of delivery, when voting rights necessitate actual notice, which can't be achieved by not individually requested mail.
