when in fact, they were too slow to lock down and therefore let the virus get out of control, and are now largely over it because of that.

Did you see the large groups of protesters in NYC in June? Yet their daily deaths and even cases keep going down. In cities that had not developed that immunity yet, the protests caused spikes. You can easily see it with the dates of large protests, the covid incubation period, then associated spikes. The one place that didn't really happen is NYC. Surely just a coincidence, right?
