that it was more economical to pay their workers a pitance and allow them to fend for themselves. They were not responsible for clothing, hosting and feeding the workers. They did not have to pay for overseers. And they only had to pay productive workers, women and children were the responsibility of the worker not the employer.
Slavery was already an outmoded system at the start of the war. Pressure from the north and inertia were probably the biggest reasons it lasted as long as it did.
