How incredibly ironic. The south lost and hardly had a tradition of freedom. At the time of secession, of the 9 million people in the confederate states, 3.5 million were enslaved.
And, why would anyone name a base after John Bell Hood (as in Fort Hood Texas)?? As a general, he was a disaster for the south. Not only did he lose Atlanta, he then took his army (second largest in the south) and wrecked it in an ill-advised charge at Franklin Tennessee only to have Thomas finish it off at Nashville a few weeks later. And we name the major Armor base in the nation after this guy.
