The war was fought in actuality over secession but the south seceded because of slavery. Don't believe me? Ask your ancestors. They spelled it out very clearly in their declarations of secession and the confederate constitution. Ask Confederate General John Mosby.
"I am not ashamed of having fought on the side of slavery—a soldier fights for his country—right or wrong—he is not responsible for the political merits of the course he fights in" and that "The South was my country."
The evidence that the south seceded solely to protect slavery is overwhelming and irrefutable. It was recorded by those that seceded. Few are naive enough to see the civil war as something as honorable as a struggle between good and evil but it was a struggle caused by slavery.
