Don't get in the middle of this crap often but you're only partially correct. Lincoln was very worried (and rightfully so) that freeing slaves or being seen as overly aggressive with emancipation would lose big chunks of TN and KY which remained with the Union. Middle TN was especially crucial to the Union. Basically, the entire world was racist at that time. But, many whites from the founding through the Civil War knew slavery was evil and impossible to reconcile with our founding ideals. German immigrants in STL were a primacy reason that MO stayed in the Union. I'm sure most German men were racist against blacks at that time but they also knew that slavery was inherently evil and sided with the Union.
The War was fought over many things but slavery was right at the top. The War may not have been fought over racism but it was fought over slavery. Slavery is an overt inhumane, evil act. Racism is wrong but can be separated from action, whether through the law, fear, societal norms, etc.
The southern lie that the "Civil War wasn't fought over slavery" needs to die. Those are the books that need to be erased. Do you know how much destruction has been caused by the assassination of Lincoln and his replacement with the turd Andrew Johnson. Johnson made damn sure the War didn't evolve from a fight over slavery to a national movement toward reconciliation and equality.
