He didn't. He had one really good year. He had many really bad years from 3, both early and late in his career.
MJ was a graceful, high flying, ultra competitive player with great footwork and a great mid-range game. He was clutch. He was bigger and more athletic that other 2's of his era, and the rules against zones meant he could go one on one, and then the defense had to scramble back into the lane to try and stop him. He was the perfect player for the rules of his era. And, he was the hero of the league. He got calls like no one else. (He had some bad games, too. He was human.)
He was my favorite player, and the most graceful athlete I've ever seen. He was the best of his era.
It is much more difficult to get all the way to the rim these days, IMO. I think players have gotten better over time. Transport KD, Lebron, or Harden back to those times, clear out a side and force every defender to get out of the lane, then see what happens. I don't even want to imagine what the Greek Freak would look like, back when shooting wasn't as important.
I'm not running down MJ. I just find the mythology to be over the top, even to the point that he was a good 3 point shooter, once he worked on it. Stats aren't hard to find.
