Far more likely that he got picked up for the ruckus in the Temple and summarily executed. His brother James kept alive his cult group The Way and years later a martyr was made of him. Fables. myths and stories grew around the legend such as the sky shaking with the voice of God at the Jordan River. There is quite a theory by one scholar that John was a failed Essene, he was wildly tempered to survive in such a sedate and disciplined environment at Qumran and he began an itinerant teacher and holy man.
The story goes further that Jesus had been an acolyte or follower of John who shortly after John's execution took up his own ministry. MY interest in all of this was who was the changed the world, so I study the sht out of it. The idea that GOD waits nearly 400,000 years after Man wanders from Africa to suddenly spin out this drama doesn't seem realistic as history but as myth. Jesus perhaps myth like Moses was myth. A legendary Charismatic that history turns into a fable. Equally fascinating.
