The federal Family and Medical Leave Act (FMLA) gives eligible employees the right to take up to 12 weeks off in a 12-month period for the following reasons:

* because the employee is incapacitated by a serious health condition, or

* because the employee is needed to care for a family member with a serious health condition.

* to care for a new child
