Each woman would need on average to bear about 2.1 children for a population to remain constant.

Some of those children would die young, or be infertile, of course.

A husband & a wife would need to have at least 2 children to keep the numbers in each generation equivalent, no?

In the US the average has dropped to ~ 1.7. At those levels would be about a 19% drop in population every generation if immigration & emigration were equal.
