I don't have a problem with his thought process, as much as with his timing and implementation. You put those rules in place, quietly, before you announce the withdrawal.

If you do, Erdogan doesn't appear weak and conceding to the US, he appears to be calm and rational. No one has to know that the US said, 'don't do this, or else'. Now, since you threatened to destroy his economy after the fact, if he has little man's complex moments, he may just do it to show you and call your bluff.
