and I'm not in the crowd that says we have to do this drastic thing now. But really, is not using a plastic straw drastic? For goodness sake, the damn things are probably "made in China". I grew up drinking milk out of a paper/wax straw, not plastic ones, so alternatives exist. Plastic's just cheap and easy and a way for the petrochemical companies to get squeeze further $$$$ out of their products. Why do I need to keep enriching them? For that matter, same with coal - yes, it will devastate some communities, but it's a dying industry in some respects and why are we propping up something that the "free market" that so many love has now decided it's in its declining phase?
I think you have to address what you can and we should be looking for solutions that move us forward. And, if we're going to subsidize things, I'd rather subsidize the future, rather than the past.
