but it can't be forgotten that the carnage dished out by the allies in events like the bombing of Dresden came at a time of tremendous casualties on all sides in the European Theatre (and the Pacific Theatre).
I'm not saying, well in war **** happens but you have to look at atrocities during war through the prism of the overall losses of the war itself.
Events like My Lai even have to be seen in the context of what those soldiers were enduring in the months before. They were angry at losses incurred by their fellow troops and were paranoid of the citizenry. The answer was not a massacre but that's what happened and while it is a terrible event, it should also be recognized as a symptom of the what war does to people.
The answer, therefore, is no war. End war and you end things like the bombing of Dresden. You end things like My Lai.
