How does noting a commonality border on racism?

If I note that MLS games are disproportionately attended by Hispanics that is NOT racist.
If I say that drug users are more likely to commit petty crimes no one will argue that fact. The data bears it out.
But for some reason people get all bent out of shape when someone, correctly, points out that blacks are much more likely to commit violent crimes. There is a good chance they will be branded a racist. How can data be racist? How can simply acknowledging that data be racist?
Just because something is unpleasant to hear does not mean the person saying it has evil motives. How can behavior be changed if we are unwilling to discuss that behavior?
