Serious question--It seems to me that a very large part of this fan base has complete contempt for the man. I really do not understand this. I have been frustrated on more than one occasion by some of his decisions, no doubt, but so many Mizzou fans seem to really have a complete disdain for him.
He has to be given an extension--It's a recruiting thing. He has to be able to go out on the trail and let kids know he's going to be here in 4 years, it is how this business works. He's coming off of back to back bowl seasons and while he was given a terrific quarterback and some weapons, it is not like MU was coming off a great season and of course the social situation he walked into was no peach either.
In my opinion, he's a good man and a coach who seems to be learning on the job. He seems to be improving, he appears to run a clean program and his players seem to rally around him. His teams do not quit, I think that is obvious. From what I can tell he is opening back up the pipeline to Texas, where so many of our stars of the last generation came from. And he also seems to be doing a very good job of finding kids who are under the radar and coaching them up, something Coach Pinkel and his staff did a great job of.
I know I'll probably get knocked for "accepting mediocrity" but at Mizzou I think we can expect to win 7-9 games every year and maybe every 4-5, play for a conference title and thus a shot at the CFP. And maybe Barry Odom is not the right guy to get us there, but in my opinion he's earned the right to continue to try.
And if it is not Barry Odom, then Sterk had better be sure he has the guy lined up--I'm not talking "one of many" better choices, he'd better have the one guy he believes is the right coach to move this program forward because otherwise, you could be taking a big step back. Other programs have gone down this path and are still digging themselves out of it. So if Sterk is willing to walk on Odom, he'd better not be gambling on the field, he needs his version of a sure thing.
