this, in my hypothetical situation, the chinese sent their widgets here at a cost less than it cost to manufacture, or at least at some price point with which we could not compete. The chinese company which like all of them is essentially a government run enterprise and is willing to take a loss in order to drive your widget company out of business.
But while your company goes out of business, consumers get widgets cheap. Yay. But what do you think the chinese will do with their prices once they are the only major provider...? You think they might raise prices, a lot?
Just wondering.
So if we (sorry ummm) impose tariffs to make the cost of the chinese widgets equal or more expensive than ours (sorry ummm) than the cost of widgets merely returns to the fair market price they were at before being undercut by the chinese.
That probably offends umm and his handler as taking an affirmative step by the government and raising prices to a point where business can make a living instead of a killing by chinese companies.
