Doesn't it just buy a brief window at a very high cost?

The West gets a brief window of time during which Iran gives up some of its nuclear tools and materials. Iran did not commit to not resume nuclear weapons development down the road when that window ends.
In return the sanctions that were crippling Iran's economy and lessening it's ability to cause trouble in the Middle East were lifted.
So by temporarily slowing its nuclear weapons development, there is not commitment to not pursue nuclear weapons development or not resume at a faster pace in the future, Iran will have a better economy that will provide it with more resources to create havoc in the Middle East.
