Since it will inevitably get lost below, and because I was late to the party, Id like to mention a few things about the Iran Nuclear deal.
1) Iran is in compliance. The IAEA says they are. The US State Dept says they are. All countries involved say they are.
2) Scrapping the Iran deal now will lose any/all credibility we have to denuclearize North Korea. Its been 3 years since the Iran deal was inked. Why would NK trust us to live up to any negotiated terms if, in 3 years, we back out with Iran.
3) We are the only country in the agreement that thinks its bad or wants it scrapped. Even Boris Johnson of the UK Brexit Party suggests that its a good deal and will keep Iran from immediately developing a nuclear weapon.
Federica Mogherini, the European Union's top foreign affairs official, said that all parties to the Iran nuclear deal agree that Tehran is in compliance with the plan. This came after a high-level meeting of all countries involved in the deal.
In a press briefing after the meeting, Tillerson said that the U.S. did not dispute that Iran was in "technical compliance" with the JCPOA.
4) How, exactly, is this deal one-sided, as Trump says constantly?
Iran gave up 98% of its enriched Uranium. It cannot stockpile more than 300kg of Uranium for at least 15 years.
Iran gave up 70% of its centrifuges, leaving only its oldest and least efficient for at least 10 years.
Iran wont be able to build a heavy water reactor to produce weapons-grade Plutonium for at least 15 years.Iran is allowed to keep 130 metric tons of 'heavy water'. Iran has crept above that number on two occasions according to the IAEA. Each infraction, Iran was over by a fraction of one ton.
Iran will allow robust inspection of known and suspected nuclear sites, including military areas, as well as any suspected site. Sites can be deemed suspicious based on holes in the ground that could indicate uranium mines, unexplained purchases or isotope alarms. If Iran objects to a particular inspection, a newly formed joint commission will decide whether to grant access. The commission, composed of the six countries who have been negotiating the agreement, plus Iran and the European Union, must make the call within 24 days, not enough time for Iran to hide evidence if it had opened a covert enrichment site, officials say.
5) What did we give them?
The United Nations, United States and European Union will lift crippling economic sanctions against Iran. Iran will have to meet the requirements to reduce its uranium stockpile, mothball centrifuges, dismantle the Arak reactor and give the IAEA information about its past activities before sanctions are lifted. Once the IAEA verifies that Iran has met those obligations, the U.S., U.N. and EU will lift sanctions. At that time, Iran will be able to sell oil again, rejoin the international financial system and reclaim overseas assets worth an estimated $100 billion to $150 billion that currently are frozen in international accounts.
To the people who agree with Trump that this is a one-sided deal, or that this is unfair in any way to the United States.... why do you think that?
